Too Scared to Speak Out (Against Trump) | A Freedom of No Speech

Hey Sweeties,

I am not wholly sure where I am going with this post, but I know I need to write something so I figured I would just start writing, and hope it will make sense later. Here goes.

As you all know, I do not shy away from opinions and things both on this blog and on my social media accounts. While some areas of politics and world culture do present a challenge to discuss, some things you cannot but stick on your wellington boots and wade into the conversation with, no matter how sticky and muddy it may be.

So, this thing with Trump…

I am not sure I can say or present anything about Donald Trump that others have not already voiced and this post is not going to try. Dare I say it, we knew this was coming when a country votes in a leader that has very dangerous views and ways to action them. Part of my theory is that Trump does not think he is going to serve his full term in office, so he is cracking on with as much as he can before he is booted out of the White House. But who knows, right?

This morning it was announced that Sally Yates, Trump’s Acting US Attorney General got fired for contradicting the travel ban (which has stopped people from seven Muslim-majority countries entering the US) and if Twitter is anything to go by, she’s been applauded as a hero, and good for her I say! Normally to be fired from a position is something to be frowned upon, but how satisfying it must be to be fired because your values are considered a threat because they represent the majority view.

I think there are two things that have so far come out of Trump’s Presidency that are almost as alarming as Trump himself. 1. Our Prime Minister is actually spineless when it comes to standing up to bad people, and 2. How people of influence are not using their voice to speak out against wrongdoing. Let me elaborate on the latter point.

Women’s fashion: Why what women wear IS an issue

Women’s fashion. One of the things I most love about this blog, and my writing in many ways, is how I don’t fear or attempt to dodge topics of conversation that might be on the controversial side.

Claireysweetie.com enables more in depth discussion about things personal to me, such as my struggles with (social) anxiety, but also on things like why I hate girl squads and other such things that come into the media and popular culture.

I like creating conversation, I like sharing my opinion. So today I have an opinion on something that is either going to have a lot of you explode at me in disagreement, or actually, you’ll agree with me and I of course hope it’s the latter.

Why what women wear is an issue

First of all to clarify for the record: A woman can wear anything she likes. What someone wears does not define them and when I say (or suggest, or reference) ‘unwanted attention’ or, ‘the wrong kind of attention’ I am 100% absolutely categorically not talking about rape.

I am talking about being in a bar or a club, or maybe even walking down the street, and a young woman is getting pestered, or wolf whistled by a couple of blokes because quite possibly (but not definitely), what she is wearing is getting them all in a fluster.

For the most part this unwanted behaviour can be harmless and a sharp “fuck off” usually does the trick, but sometimes it doesn’t but that’s a man’s issue, not the woman’s. Okay?

However my argument here and the underlying truth is that (young) women still need to be careful or at least mindful, with their appearance in public, particularly when out on the town. I think designers behind women’s fashion need to look at the items they are creating, and the looks they are encouraging.

Remember this is the opinion of an almost thirty year-old.

Celebrity Deaths and Why We Mourn Them | Sunday Chat

Hey Sweeties,

2016 was bad year for celebrity deaths, and I mean, significant celebrity deaths and when we thought we were in the clear, we lost George Michael and Carrie Fisher just before 2017 dawned; really quite shit. For me, in 2016 my devastation started when I saw the news break on Twitter about Alan Rickman, he was my total older man crush and today he has been gone 366 days yet it still feels fresh, as though it was yesterday. I was also very sad about Victoria Wood, and I surprised myself by how upset I was about Caroline Aherne; 52 is no age to go. For all the celebrity deaths last year, every loss was a loss.

So why are we upset about celebrity deaths, people dying that we do not even know? Well, I am not a psychologist so I have no scientific explanation, so I can only talk from an emotional one based on my own experience.

Squad Goals & Why I don’t want to be in your Gang

Hey Sweeties,

I don’t think it’s just me to notice, but the media in 2016 was obsessed with inventing a million new buzz words that suddenly, and quite unconsciously, entered our everyday vocabulary. This also applies to trends and today I want to address this whole (girl) #squad bollocks that mostly seemed to attach itself to Taylor Swift and the like.

Taylor Swift alone I could write a whole blog post on. I love her music and while she is absolutely totally free to date and shag who she likes (21st Century 4th wave feminism n’all), the other half of me just thinks she shouldn’t flaunt it quite so much (because I’m married and nearly thirty which seems to have had an effect on how I  view certain behaviour).

Anyway.

Why So Anti? The Confessions of a Grumpy Almost Thirty Year-Old

Hey Sweeties,

You know the more something is hyped up, the more some people retreat back from it? This is me. Lately I have come to realise that I have gotten used to being so anti things, I have almost actually prevented myself from enjoying anything, isn’t that crazy? But it’s true, it’s an historic trait in me, and I hate myself a little bit for it because it’s just so unnecessary. So today my Sweeties, in a bid to be better and less anti like, I am confessing my most recent sins in hope of forgiveness. Here goes:

Autumn –I frickin’ love autumn, I think everyone in the UK does; I love the changing colours of the trees; dry, crisp leaves on the floor; and the opportunity to wrap up warm; but from about mid-august it felt like everyone (by everyone I mean mostly bloggers -sorry guys, but you know it’s true!), suddenly got bored of the heat and the sun and it was time to start dreaming about chunky knits, boots, berry lips and such like which quite frankly, pissed me off. I love summer, I love the sun, I love the long days that end late into the evening; for my general upbeatness, I need days like this, so I just cannot understand why everyone gets so caught up in the romanticism of autumn and wishes summer away. Autumn is a beautiful season, sure, but let’s just calm down okay and enjoy the moment we’re in.

Action: As we’re now in autumn, let’s go for it! Cue all the autumness!
