Let me begin with a story –
Six years ago in June 2011, I had recently joined a well known betting company on their promotions team and was given the opportunity to have a week away (I was living in Bristol at the time) to work Royal Ascot. I wouldn’t say I jumped at the chance because I am not someone that particularly enjoys staying away, but I decided to go for it any way. Royal Ascot that year was almost a complete wash out and if it wasn’t pouring with rain, or windy, it was pouring with rain and being windy at the same time; it wasn’t a whole lot of fun I have got to be honest. Anyway.
Cutting a long story short, it was during this week I met the man that five years later I married, and you’ll only know the full story if you were at my wedding and listened to my speech. All that being said, although my husband and I are regular race goers and have been to Ascot racecourse since meeting, we have never made it back to Royal Ascot and this year we finally did. So on Tuesday 20th June 2017, we put on our glad rags and headed back to the place where it all began for the both of us.
Royal Ascot 2017
In total contrast to what it was like six years prior, on the day we rocked up at Royal Ascot it was the hottest day of the year, it was sweltering! We took the train to Ascot and walked up the hill to the race course; it made a change to be dressed up as opposed to standing in the high street as a promotions girl (not that I wasn’t nicely dressed then of course too, but you know… it was cold, and wet).
I love Ascot race course, it is quite possibly my favourite English course – I love its cruise ship shaped exterior that towers high over the track and it always fills me with happy thoughts on the few occasions we drive past. We arrived early so we had time to sit at a table and chairs in the Queen’s Enclosure ahead of the Royal possession, and enjoy a pitcher of Pims.
It was so hot so I was pleased I ended up going for a shorter dress instead of the long maxi dress I was originally thinking I would wear on the day. I bought this little red dress for a total steal at £8 from a sale on Boohoo.com a couple of months ago and it was perfect for my day at the races.
The shoes were a last minute find from Miss Pap and I got them for £21 in the 30% off everything sale the week before Royal Ascot; so I cut it a little bit finely but they were stunning!
Overall (and despite the heat), it was a fantastic day and it was amazing to finally be able to experience Royal Ascot as a race goer, and not an employee; I really hope I get to go again in the future.
Have any of you ever been to Royal Ascot? Did you enjoy it?
Until next time xFollow
