Christmas Adverts 2015 Round-up | Blogmas Day 17

Hey Sweeties,

Before ClaireySweetie was born, my very first blog was over at thepassionqueen.wordpress.com which allowed me to talk about my love of advertising. Before John Lewis took over, I used to really look forward to the adverts at Christmas and I would do a roundup post discussing the key ones of that particular year. I miss doing this so I thought I would recreate that post on here for you guys, I hope that’s ok?

Before we get to it, what I will say is that I find the key players (the big brands –John Lewis, Sainsbury’s etc.) lose their momentum as the month goes on. At the start of November, particularly now with social media, everyone goes mental over the new Christmas adverts but within a week or two, I barely see them on my TV and conversation stops, and that’s before we’ve even actually had Christmas! Considering the budgets behind them, I actually think it’s the brands with the simpler campaigns that I feel have any kind of consistency. Agree?

Disclaimer: If you’re a fan of John Lewis advertising, please skip to the next advert so I cause no offence.

#Manonthemoon

I’m sorry, I really dislike this advert, not only is it not in the least bit sad, the whole science of the concept is completely unbelievable. While I can cry at most things at the drop of a hat, I have never cried at a John Lewis advert –I’m not made of stone, I just become numb to forced emotion and John Lewis seem to have got set on making people cry, over going out and making a great advert. I totally get the message about not forgetting the elderly at this time of year, and I know of a few people that were pushed to call up their Grandparents and relatives which is great. But that aside, I still dislike it and I am really disappointed in John Lewis for not taking the opportunity to go in a different direction this year with their advertising. Hopefully next Christmas they’ll have a change of tact.

Sainsbury’s –Mog’s Christmas Calamity

In defence of poor Mog, like with any domestic pet, you do something called ‘pet proofing’. As you know I have a house bunny (Lola) and as a fairly experienced rabbit owner, I understand that they chew through everything. I have never owned a cat but I assume there is a similar process that experienced owners go through with proofing their home. Mog’s family cannot be experienced cat owners for who would leave a cable of lights dangling by her bed? I’ll also say it took them a long time to realise shit was going on downstairs as she must have made a hellava racket. That all being said, I actually really like this offering from Sainsbury’s as it captures the true meaning of Christmas but like the John Lewis ad, it seems to have disappeared from our screens as quickly as it appeared?!

Asda

Remember what I said earlier about some brands creating simpler campaigns? Asda is the perfect example (as well as Lidl and Aldi this year too). On launch its long but as the month goes on, shorter edits of the advert are used and are far more impactful. *applauds*

Sky

I’ll let slide why people have left the table for a movie before everyone (notably Rosie) has finished eating, but I otherwise really like this advert –its fun and it captures a child’s imagination perfectly.

Waitrose –What makes Your Christmas?

I hated Waitrose’s advert last year (you can tell I’m a tough critic to please, right?). To be honest, along with John Lewis it’s what for me was the final straw with Christmas advertising becoming all about being over emotional rather than fun. So this year, I’m glad they didn’t follow John Lewis’ lead and instead went back to their roots and concentrated on what they do best –selling good quality food.

But of course, the real winner of the Christmas adverts is of course, Cocoa Cola –without fail, every single year, Christmas hasn’t officially started until you hear that distinctive sound and chime of the bells to confirm that the holidays are coming!

What are you favourite Christmas adverts?

Five Ways to Style a Tunic

Hey Sweeties,

I am not going to lie to you, I wanted to play photoshoots in the garden and figured I would also have a bit of fun trying to come up with different looks using a new purchase from George at Asda. This isn’t the world’s best executed post but I am in the process of experimenting with something new that may feature further on here going forward… and we all have to start somewhere don’t we?!

So, the new purchase; a ‘mixed yarn tunic’ in plum from Asda and I am delighted that I finally have this having had my eye on it for a while. Why I haven’t had it sooner is because I didn’t quite feel I wanted to spend £12 on it, so you can imagine my delight when passing quickly through the store I found it in the sale for £8! Winner!

Rather than just add this into a future haul post, I thought I would show it to you with some ideas on how I might style it…

1. As you can see above, I have simply paired the tunic with tights and my patent buckle shoes from Office but this would look nice with any pair of flats.

2. Let’s add a hat… you’ll remember I bought this one from Aldo and featured in my London shopping haul post (here) last year.

3. Rather than tights, how about some black knee-high socks? Again you could pair with flats but here I have dug out an old pair of Kickers (remember them?!).

4. Reaching for my hat again, I have now added my Forever 21 gilet also bought on the same London trip. I love this look!

5. I bought these heeled open-toed boots from Dorothy Perkins a few years ago and I love them! They add a bit of edge to any outfit and I particularly like them with the tunic.

This tunic would also look nice kept simple over leggings and/or worn with sandals; it’s a really versatile item of my wardrobe. As shown above, this tunic can be kept casual or accessorised to smarten up.

How would you style this tunic?

George at Asda & MissGuided Fashion Haul

Fashion Haul

Hey Sweeties,

So it seemed only the other week I posted a haul on here… oh wait, I did (here)! But as the seasons begin to change so is my style and consequently my wardrobe so while I am still on a beauty purchasing ban during Lent, my attention and spending has turned to fashion…naturally.

Until recently, I had never purchased from Missguided.com but their constant Tweets advertising an additional 40% off sale items eventually got the better of me and I logged on and began browsing. I liked much of what I saw, not all of it was really stuff I would or could wear by which I mean, not my style/suitable for work, and I don’t really have a social life requiring little dresses. There’s also no point buying clothes for the sake of it, they ideally need to fill a gap in my wardrobe so when I stumbled upon the Asma Chunky Knit Check Cardigan in Monochrome, I was sold!

I was so pleased when it arrived that it fitted (this is in a size 12) and looked great (always hard to tell when the models are size 8!) and I love the overall style, particularly the leather patches on the shoulder. This will be a piece that can transition easily from winter to summer and with the 40% discount this went from being £22 to I think £13 -bargain!

One of the places I think people don’t quite appreciate for fashion are supermarkets, admittedly I am one too but actually the likes of Sainsbury’s (Tu), Tesco (F&F) and in this instance Asda (George), create perfectly affordable, wearable and quality clothing and accessories.

I have been after a stripey dress for ages and when in Asda recently I took the opportunity to browse the sale rails and stumbled upon one that almost fitted (on sight) my exact requirements but unfortunately it was too big and there weren’t any others available. So once more the internet came to my rescue and I was fortunately able to find it on George online.

This isn’t the exact style of stripey dress I have been after but for a simple, basic everday/weekend dress this fits the bill and for £4, I can’t really complain!

While browsing, I also came across this grey, roll neck dress which wasn’t in the sale but at £12, it still hardly breaks the bank.

I haven’t really got anything like this as although I don’t wear tight, figure hugging clothes, I do generally buy and wear clothing with more of a structured fit to them. Saying that, I do really love this much for the same reasons as my other George purchase as it’s simple, very wearable and good quality.

Can you guys recommend me any other online sites similar to Missguided and Asos? I love hitting the high street but I can never buy anything too distinctive to one place i.e. to Primark, Miss Selfridge as I like to not follow the masses (as they say) so I can only buy basic items that don’t instantly scream where they are from. Being also in my later twenties, I find -particularly recently- a lot of high street fashion to be very young, for instance crops tops aren’t really suitable to my age range (although that doesn’t stop some!). On my Twitter and Instagram I always here of online sites but to be honest I never know where to start really so any tips and prods in the right direction will be much appreciated 😉

Until next time x
