Happy Birthday ClaireySweetie! What I’ve learnt in three years of Blogging | Blogmas Day 13

Hey Sweeties,

I can’t believe it, ClaireySweetie is three years old today! Sometimes I wonder why I stopped contributing to the blog I was writing previously, and just change the content I was posting, but sometimes it is just easier to start afresh. In creating ClaireySweetie, I firmly stepped into the realm of blogging and not just writing deeper discussion pieces, I also could indulge in my growing interest in beauty and lifestyle and bring you guys along for the journey. So, what have I learnt in three years of blogging?

Building your following can be slow

Trust me! I’ve been wanting to achieve 500 followers on ClaireySweetie for aaaages now (please follow me if you’re not already) and we’re slowly getting there but it takes time. When I do eventually hit my goal, I know I’ll have earnt every single one of those follows and I’ll be over the moon. I think it’s wrong for people to say that following isn’t important, and to frown at those who question how and why other blogs have a larger, more engaged following than they do, because it’s human nature. And if you want to make a success of your blog, a loyal following is totally needed and necessary to attract brands to want to work with you. I’m more interested in becoming a freelance writer over becoming a full-time blogger, but I still need to prove that people want to read what I create if that dream is going to be a reality in the future. But just keep doing what you’re doing, and the followers will come.

Quality over quantity

In the beginning, it took a while for me to build up enough content to post, particularly for beauty when I could only write about what I bought myself. You also feel pressured to build up a good back log of content quickly to share so there’s enough to keep people on your site. Once I got into a schedule, I religiously kept to it and I would sometimes post for the sake of posting and while the writing has always been consistent, the photography hasn’t. Now, while I still try to keep to posting 2-3 times a week, I only post when I’m 100% happy with the content, which means I might have to wait a while for a good day to get some photography done. Typical really that I’m now not short of things to write about, but I am short of time and daylight to get photos taken which ultimately stalls posting.

Investing in a good camera is worth it

Any Blogger will tell you this but it’s like anything you’re serious about, if you want to be good you invest in your tools and a good camera is worth every single penny. I purchased my Canon DSLR 1200D a couple of years ago following a year of saving £2 coins along with some birthday and Christmas money. It transformed ClaireySweetie instantly as it gave my content a much more professional finish. I now have the Olympus PEN E-PL7 (or 8) in my sights.

You will receive emails from companies who want you to write about something… for a social share?

That and infographics. In the early days, I was flattered people contacted me so I did the odd post where I wrote about a topic, took photos, and included a link to their website or specific page with a short description about them… in re of an earlier point, sometimes I welcomed the idea for content.  Then after doing this a couple of times, you quickly realise that these companies rarely ever share your post, let alone acknowledge it and you wonder why you bothered. But that’s okay to do in the early days when you’re trying to grow your audience, and who knows where a free bit of work will get you eh? Now, find out if there’s a budget early on and if not, politely decline unless it’s an idea that you are happy to write about and share for free.

Everything becomes bloggable

It really does, everything I do now or plan to do in the near future, I wonder if I can make a blog post of it. If I’m going somewhere, is the place of interest or is the outfit I plan to wear? I’m going on my honeymoon next year and while I’m excited for the travel and the break it will provide, I’m also already wondering how much of it I document, ha! But big things aside, we share everything now and it does sadden me when you’re watching a firework display and people are watching it from behind the lens of their phone, busily uploading it for others to see, rather than concentrate on experiencing it in real-time yourself. But this is life now.

What are the things you have learnt in your time blogging?

What I got for my birthday 2016 featuring Clarins and Pandora

What I got for my birthday 2016 – A couple of days ago it was my 29th birthday and I was a very lucky girl this year with some of the gifts I received. I was also treated to tickets to see Guys & Dolls in the West End which is currently starring Rebel Wilson; the show was brilliant and she was fabulous!

Twenty-Nine Things to do in my final year before Thirty | August Blogs

Hey Sweeties,

It’s my birthday!! Today I am twenty-nine years old (young, whatever) and in this final year of my twenties, I have a few things I want to finally achieve, see and do before I reach my third decade –some serious, some silly, some just nice-to-haves. Some things are already in the calendar for me to tick off, but for the most part I need to spend the next fifty-two weeks making that time for myself to tick off everything else not yet scheduled or feel I have given enough attention to. I also have to acknowledge that all being well, this might be my last year of being able to be totally selfish with my time and money before another being occupies it. I know on some people’s thirty before thirty lists, starting a family is one of those things they want and it’s the same for me, I want children but I don’t want starting a family to become stressful or something I have to, ‘tick off’ achieving; it happens when it happens and that might be before I hit thirty, or it might not.

On that note, I think it’s important to remember and acknowledge how quickly things can change. Last year I wasn’t yet engaged but within the 12 months since I did get engaged and I’m now married. I know a lot of people see being single as a problem and while I can totally relate that being single can be an immensely lonely time for some, you also need to own that time for yourself. I talk about being selfish but that selfishness is now within the boundaries of marriage, your selfishness is still 100% yours. Your twenties are for finding out who you are and I certainly achieved this through exploring a couple of career options; living away from home around the UK pursuing those careers; my time at University and the years since. In my later adult life I have unfortunately had to deal with social anxiety making an appearance, but anxiety in adulthood, albeit a short spell, is very common. We become more conscious about things, and more stressed which all fundamentally takes its toll on the body and mind. I have written about my social anxiety here.

twenty-nine things before thirty

So, what to put on my list? I know many do a thirty before thirty bucket list but I like trying to aim for twenty-nine just to be different and to still honour my twenties which for the most part, has been an awesome decade of my life to live; let’s round it off with another incredible year!

What I Got for my Birthday

Hey Sweeties,

These sort of posts are difficult to write as while I am kind of showing off a couple of new things, I am not deliberately bragging and I by no means hope that what follows is interpreted that way. In the same way as I show off a recent beauty or fashion haul, I kinda’ really want to show you two really special things that I got for my birthday that are just too beautiful and pretty to keep to myself.

So basically, last weekend was my birthday and for those asking, I am now the grand age of 28 years old with 30 now firmly on the horizon (Eek!). For the first time in several years, the day was spent with family which was lovely.

Anyway.

Unlike when you are younger where you take full opportunity to cram birthday and Christmas lists with gift suggestions, as you get older you either don’t make them at all, or you ask for something very specific. Everyone reaches that point where you are in charge of your own money and life, and thus generally buy everything you need and want yourself. That being said, sometimes you see something that you think, yes I could buy myself, but I would appreciate it so much more as a gift… and this is exactly the case with the new Pandora Rose charm bracelet.

As soon as I was aware of the release, I knew that it would be the perfect gift from Ian and going forward, it means the bracelet can be added to with new charms when Christmas, birthday’s and other special occasions take place.  View Full Post

Sweetie Birthday

Birthday cards

I am writing this my Sweeties, another year older (and quite possibly wiser?) as last weekend was my birthday and I am now the grand old age of 27! Scary!

Fortunately Saturday happened to be the one day of the weekend it didn’t rain so I can imagine Ian breathed a sigh of relief when he woke up and looked out the window as he had booked us a boat trip up the Thames in Windsor. He is so brilliant with surprises and gifts! Aside from the planned day’s activities, he bought me this gorgeous little (but very heavy) Westie door stop which to be honest I had been dropping massive hints about for months following seeing it in the window of an antique shop! (FYI, yes Ian did apparently go in and ask “how much is the dog in the window”). I absolutely love west highland terriers and have done for years so I really couldn’t resist this, particularly as we have just moved house and have a very irritating door that needs propping open all the time. It was like fate!

Another thing I have been banging on about for months but more so as an idea for something to see at Christmas, is west end show, Wicked! This has been on my must-see list for years but I have just never had the chance to go and see it so you can imagine my excitement when Ian handed me an envelope with tickets in for October! Even better, Ian booked them for when he is away on a boys trip so the tickets are for Mum and me to go as she is due to stay that weekend and help me do some wallpapering. Can’t. Frickin’. Wait!

The day itself was perfect. After patiently waiting for me to get ready, we walked to the train station in town and travelled to Windsor which is a mere 6 minutes away. As we are very new to the area, I anticipate Windsor will become my number one favourite place to spend a nice day in –have a coffee, mooch about the shops etc. And on a sunny day you really can’t beat it, it’s a lovely little place… with a big castle in the middle of it!

The boat trip was really fun and took a little over 2 hours to complete. Here are some photos taken from the boat:
