Why I Love Elle Magazine

Hey Sweeties,

It’s the penultimate post in this favourite’s series and today I focus on a long time favourite of mine… Elle magazine!

Elle Magazine

I have been a long term, fiercely loyal reader of Elle magazine for years, becoming a subscriber I think in 2007 and have never looked back. Last year (2014) was a fantastic year as -being an Elle Insider- I got four opportunities to get involved with the magazine. The first was to review Benefit’s Push Up Liner (here); an evening with Ruby Tandoh where I finally got to meet Lorraine Candy (here); an opportunity to take part in Estee Lauder’s Modern Muse campaign (here) and finally, again with Benefit, an opportunity to see and try out Roller Lash before general release (here).   View Full Post

Estee Lauder Modern Muse Chic Fragrance Review

Blogmas day 19

Hey Sweeties,

As you know I recently participated in a promotion with Elle and Estee Lauder as part of the new fragrance, Modern Muse Chic which celebrates the modern, independent woman. You’ll remember that the main element of the day was to appear in a video that would eventually be live on Elle.Com and I can finally share this with you –please click on the link below!

I have seen & been in contact with a couple of the other Elle Insiders since shooting the video and we have all been really keen to see the end result and see how much -if at all- our little individual segments will appear. Personally, I am absolutely delighted with the video and I think everyone involved got involved and I think the final edit is brilliant. Can you spot me?

Now all that is left for me to do is to let you know what I think about the new fragrance, Modern Muse Chic.

Modern Muse Chic

If I am honest, Estee Lauder aren’t particularly a go to brand for young people or at least I don’t think they were pre the signing of Kendall Jenner which happened to be announced to the world on the day of filming the video. The one product I am very keen to get my hands on though is their Bronze Goddess bronzing powder; the packagaing is just beautiful and the product is fantastic but at a pricey £32 I am going to have to be patient for a while and hope I can either afford myself an extravagent reward (for maybe a new job) or be hopefull someone will gift it to me.

Fragrances are one of those things that can be either very right or very wrong and interestingly won’t be the same on everyone so opinion really is personal here. Fortunately for you guys though, I love it!

If I am wearing a fragrance, I don’t want it to be overpowering but I equally don’t want it to be too subtle either and Modern Muse Chic has that great balance I am after.

I also love the bottle; it’s elegant and well… chic! I also like that the lid looks like a bow but with the black studded appearance and texture it gives the whole product an edge which I think is great.

Elle Insider Event with Estee Lauder: Modern Muse

Estee Lauder Modern Muse

Hey Sweeties,

Originally thinking I would have to keep this a secret until later in December; I can in fact share my latest visit to Elle Magazine HQ with you guys now –yippee!

So, earlier this month I was emailed by Elle asking me (an Elle Insider) if I wanted to join Team Elle in the Fashion Cupboard to celebrate Estée Lauder’s new fragrance, Modern Muse Chic. They wanted a selection of Insider’s to go up to HQ and share their stories about who inspires them. Of course I jumped at this opportunity!

So, bright and early (9am to be precise) last Saturday I was in London barefaced and ready for a morning of filming! Once our attendance had been confirmed a week or two before, we were asked to arrive with an answer prepared for this question:

“What is the most inspirational advice I have ever been given by another woman?”

To be honest, this wasn’t as easy to answer as you would think. I read a lot of things that inspire me but inspiration advice I have been told directly? Not so much. However, my mind did cast back to my teen self during my A-Levels which was a miserable time for me and as you can imagine it was difficult for my Mum to see me so regularly stressed out and upset that naturally she wanted to rid me of what was getting me so down. I remember her telling me that I didn’t have to keep with the course, that it was ok to quit and that I had already made her really proud. Of course I didn’t quit but what I took from that moment was that it is important to not do something for the sake of others and for you and you alone. You should be at the heart of all decisions. This for me has been quite inspirational and something I have drawn upon regularly.

Unfortunately, when it came to filming, our prepared paragraphs actually had to be crammed into a mere sentence or two so what that will get edited into I don’t know. Essentially the message I hope to come from my input will be to keep things simple and not overload yourself. But we’ll see, I’ll share the video with you guys once I have been sent it but it’ll also be available to view on Elle.com!

One of the perks of the day was being able to get my hair and makeup professionally done!

Overall the day was really fun and interesting and a BIG thank you goes to Elle and Estee Lauder for allowing people like me to get involved!

Until next time x

PS.

This is my third experience with Elle magazine this year, you can read about my Benefit opportunity here and seeing Lorraine Candy in conversation with Ruby Tandoh here.

Another Evening with Elle Magazine & Meeting Ruby Tandoh

Meeting Lorraine CandyHey Sweeties,

Last night I ventured into London for another evening with Elle Magazine, the second time this year! Back in May if you remember, I was invited up to Elle HQ following my Benefit They’re Real Push Up Liner review as part of being an Elle Insider. You can read about that experience here.

A couple of weeks ago I saw Elle was hosting an event with Lorraine Candy and Ruby Tandoh -Great British Bake Off runner up from last year. Ruby has just published her first baking book, Crumb and this evening was a celebration of that. Dedicated to Ransford -Ruby’s late Grandfather- Crumb is a collection of her most loved recipes taking everyone from the simple novice to the more experienced baker through a sugary delight of cakes, breads, puddings, pies and pastries to name just a few.

Crumb -Ruby Tandoh

Crumb I can’t help but feel is almost metaphorical of Ruby herself. I perceive a crumb to be part of something bigger, that something bigger thing may no longer exist or it is still in the process of being created and a crumb is an early segment as part of that process. Although during conversation with Lorraine Ruby coiled in shyness, she is in fact a very opinionated, intelligent young woman. She is also a student, a baker, an author and a columnist. Her book is just one product of her success so far. I have no doubt more will follow.

I found myself relating a lot to Ruby, not so much in her interests but in her mannerisms and character overall. A meticulous planner and having many aspects of her life mapped out, she acknowledges that plans don’t really achieve anything other than high stress and expectation. The things she is enjoying in her life now are things that no plan could have predicted but are instead happy outcomes and journeys from things not expected. For years I had (or thought I had) my life mapped out to the most minute detail, I knew what I wanted to achieve and when, so when my life started going down the paths I hadn’t anticipated, it threw me completely not to mention the stress and anxiety it caused. Now, like Ruby, I acknowledge you can’t plan everything. Life just has to happen and you go with it, wherever it goes.

In response to this, Lorraine explained that so many women, many of which make up Elle’s vast readership, put pressure on themselves to succeed. Elle is all about championing female success but as she says herself, “the best things are happy accidents”.

Meeting Ruby Tandoh

The two women also discussed -amongst getting to know Ruby as a person- how baking has changed. From being something associated almost solely with housewives and domesticity, it has now become a culture of sharing and togetherness not to mention also providing some people with highly successful careers. Ruby commented that she hopes baking, despite its popularity, will never become something uber fashionable and merely a trend or an expectation to be good at. GBBO expects and demands from its contestants a very exact and accurate style of baking whereas really -and the way Ruby enjoys it most- is an escape and a way of encouraging human companionship. Baking, she says, begins with cake.

They say you should never meet your idols but I defy anyone  to ignore their idol when standing merely inches from them. For me, it was great to meet Ruby and hear all about her, but I went to the event to meet Lorraine Candy having missed out a few months previously when at Elle HQ. I think I surprised her a little by wanting to talk to her but Lorraine gave me the time to let me tell her how much I loved the magazine, how long I have been a subscriber and admired her work. Particularly in regards to how Elle really nails what I want to read and the messages and advice I want to be given and how -most importantly- it doesn’t flaunt feminism in lame shitty F-Word campaign t-shirts (cough, Cosmopolitan!). I could have purely made the moment opportunist and asked how a girl like me writes for a magazine like Elle and pushed her into providing me the opportunity to do so. But I didn’t and I think it’s important people don’t. A foot in the door is great but when I do eventually try to pitch for a feature, I would rather my name spark a memory of the girl that met her at an event (& wrote this), rather than be deleted as just another freelancer looking for nothing other than my next writing gig.

Meeting my idol

The evening, hosted by Elle UK and sponsored by Baileys was fantastic. The Basement Sate (the bar) was how it sounds -in a basement! A total nightmare for photos but fantastically intimate for an evening of its kind. Upon arrival while we were getting settled, we were given a Baileys cocktail (which was delicious if not very alcoholic) and some chocolate based canapes made a round of the room. After the ‘conversation’ we were given an espresso martini… yummy yummy yummy!!

Unfortunately I went completely unprepared to ask any questions but others took the opportunity to learn more about GBBO. Typically, on the way home I thought about the question I would have wanted to ask. I want to know how Ruby’s partnership with Elle began following her time on the show, what was it that made Elle latch onto Ruby?

Overall, for £20 (£30 for non subscribers although they now are…) everyone had a cracking night. The conversation lasted about 30 minutes which if I am honest, I thought a bit short. I would have liked Ruby and Lorraine to have discussed broader topics, beyond matters and things concerning Ruby herself but that is by no means a complaint of the evening, just a wish of mine. Upon departure we all left with a goody bag containing a signed copy of Crumb, a small bottle of Baileys and a set of Cath Kitson tea towels. All in all, the whole evening on reflection, was priceless.

Until next time x

Psst, have you spotted me in November Elle? (top right corner).

My Evening at Elle HQ with Benefit

Hey Sweeties,

Last week I revealed that following my review of the mystery eye liner sent to me by Elle Magazine, I had been one of the specially selected Elle Insiders invited up to Elle HQ to meet the Beauty Team and attend the worldwide reveal of the Benefit liner! Well Sweeties that was last night and this is what happened…

Elle Insider

It’s not difficult to get lost in London, in my situation I don’t mean geographically but more so in everything else. I know London fairly well or at least the areas that I have ever needed to get to and be in but yesterday afternoon I ventured slightly off Oxford Circus to the streets behind and I was somewhere totally new! I was surrounded by cool types on the equally cool Carnaby Street and then off that, Broadwick Street, home of Hearst HQ and Elle Magazine!

I hovered outside the building for a few minutes before plucking up the courage to venture inside (I know, 26 years old and I’m nervous!). After being ticked off the list it was fun to see The Simpsons playing on the TV in reception which was a welcome distraction while I furiously scanned everyone that left the building in case they were top fashion peoples…which they were of course… kind of.

Then the call came, we were finally summoned to the 3rd floor (eek!) so the small group of us Elle Insiders squashed into the lift and up we went!

Elle HQ is a lot smaller than I imagined -I think I have been watching The September Issue and The Devil Wears Prada a bit too much- but ultimately it was crazy to think the pages of Elle Magazine that I pour over each month are created where I was standing! Upon crossing the threshold into the fashion world, we were shown straight into the fashion cupboard and introduced to cool fashion peoples. The fashion cupboard is not in fact a cupboard… well it is… but it isn’t. It was though perfect for hosting the Elle Insider event but I’ll admit it did get a bit hot in there once we had all arrived but I guess all cupboards do after a while if you stand in them long enough!

at Elle HQ

After one, ok, two glasses of pink bubbles and some mingling, Beauty Director Sophie and Benefit’s Head Make-Up Artist Lisa, took to the front of the room and began a discussion about the new (utterly fabulous) They’re Real Push-Up Liner which has been five years in the making and officially launches next month. What amazes me, and this can apply to pretty much anything these days, is how much technology hugely influences and dictates modern development and the gel liner is no different. Some would think it strange that technology applies to the beauty industry but it does, the clever AccuFlex tip which hugs the lash line while pushing the lashes out of the way as it glides across the eye lid effortlessly making the process of applying eyeliner a dream is no stab in the dark, its calculated intelligence and a result of months, years of painstaking research! But you know all this…

But what you don’t know and what we Elle Insiders didn’t know but were then stunned to learn was that our reviews in all their varying forms and mix of opinions and praising, had been presented at the Benefit global brand event in San Francisco! What a feeling that must have been to those behind the creation of the liner to see everyday young women absolutely loving the product and receiving it so well! As much as we were flattered we did kinda’ shit ourselves at the thought of our reviews being aired in that way!

After the talk, our attention was drawn to the fact that there was in fact a resident photo booth, complete with wind machine, in the office which a few of us dashed to as soon as we were freed. Following this, the rest of the evening was spent taking pictures and getting to know each other and the opportunity was there to have the liner professionally applied by Lisa if we wanted to. It really was a fabulous night!

Here are some of the pictures from the event…

We all left that night with a shiny goody bag containing They’re Real Mascara, They’re Real Push-up Liner and the specially formulated They’re Real Remover, which if you remember from my review and I know it was mentioned in others, the liner can be a bit of a nightmare to remove. If you wear it all day, it generally comes off fine but if you put it on for only a couple of hours it does take some scrubbing! So it was as much interesting as it was exciting to learn a remover had been made to address this!  Upon departure we couldn’t thank Elle enough for inviting us to meet them all and venture into the magical world of the Elle Fashion Cupboard, it was an amazing opportunity and one we’ll be keen to replicate again!
