Why I Love Elle Magazine

Hey Sweeties,

It’s the penultimate post in this favourite’s series and today I focus on a long time favourite of mine… Elle magazine!

Elle Magazine

I have been a long term, fiercely loyal reader of Elle magazine for years, becoming a subscriber I think in 2007 and have never looked back. Last year (2014) was a fantastic year as -being an Elle Insider- I got four opportunities to get involved with the magazine. The first was to review Benefit’s Push Up Liner (here); an evening with Ruby Tandoh where I finally got to meet Lorraine Candy (here); an opportunity to take part in Estee Lauder’s Modern Muse campaign (here) and finally, again with Benefit, an opportunity to see and try out Roller Lash before general release (here).   View Full Post

Estee Lauder Modern Muse Chic Fragrance Review

Blogmas day 19

Hey Sweeties,

As you know I recently participated in a promotion with Elle and Estee Lauder as part of the new fragrance, Modern Muse Chic which celebrates the modern, independent woman. You’ll remember that the main element of the day was to appear in a video that would eventually be live on Elle.Com and I can finally share this with you –please click on the link below!

I have seen & been in contact with a couple of the other Elle Insiders since shooting the video and we have all been really keen to see the end result and see how much -if at all- our little individual segments will appear. Personally, I am absolutely delighted with the video and I think everyone involved got involved and I think the final edit is brilliant. Can you spot me?

Now all that is left for me to do is to let you know what I think about the new fragrance, Modern Muse Chic.

Modern Muse Chic

If I am honest, Estee Lauder aren’t particularly a go to brand for young people or at least I don’t think they were pre the signing of Kendall Jenner which happened to be announced to the world on the day of filming the video. The one product I am very keen to get my hands on though is their Bronze Goddess bronzing powder; the packagaing is just beautiful and the product is fantastic but at a pricey £32 I am going to have to be patient for a while and hope I can either afford myself an extravagent reward (for maybe a new job) or be hopefull someone will gift it to me.

Fragrances are one of those things that can be either very right or very wrong and interestingly won’t be the same on everyone so opinion really is personal here. Fortunately for you guys though, I love it!

If I am wearing a fragrance, I don’t want it to be overpowering but I equally don’t want it to be too subtle either and Modern Muse Chic has that great balance I am after.

I also love the bottle; it’s elegant and well… chic! I also like that the lid looks like a bow but with the black studded appearance and texture it gives the whole product an edge which I think is great.

My Evening at Elle HQ with Benefit

Hey Sweeties,

Last week I revealed that following my review of the mystery eye liner sent to me by Elle Magazine, I had been one of the specially selected Elle Insiders invited up to Elle HQ to meet the Beauty Team and attend the worldwide reveal of the Benefit liner! Well Sweeties that was last night and this is what happened…

Elle Insider

It’s not difficult to get lost in London, in my situation I don’t mean geographically but more so in everything else. I know London fairly well or at least the areas that I have ever needed to get to and be in but yesterday afternoon I ventured slightly off Oxford Circus to the streets behind and I was somewhere totally new! I was surrounded by cool types on the equally cool Carnaby Street and then off that, Broadwick Street, home of Hearst HQ and Elle Magazine!

I hovered outside the building for a few minutes before plucking up the courage to venture inside (I know, 26 years old and I’m nervous!). After being ticked off the list it was fun to see The Simpsons playing on the TV in reception which was a welcome distraction while I furiously scanned everyone that left the building in case they were top fashion peoples…which they were of course… kind of.

Then the call came, we were finally summoned to the 3rd floor (eek!) so the small group of us Elle Insiders squashed into the lift and up we went!

Elle HQ is a lot smaller than I imagined -I think I have been watching The September Issue and The Devil Wears Prada a bit too much- but ultimately it was crazy to think the pages of Elle Magazine that I pour over each month are created where I was standing! Upon crossing the threshold into the fashion world, we were shown straight into the fashion cupboard and introduced to cool fashion peoples. The fashion cupboard is not in fact a cupboard… well it is… but it isn’t. It was though perfect for hosting the Elle Insider event but I’ll admit it did get a bit hot in there once we had all arrived but I guess all cupboards do after a while if you stand in them long enough!

at Elle HQ

After one, ok, two glasses of pink bubbles and some mingling, Beauty Director Sophie and Benefit’s Head Make-Up Artist Lisa, took to the front of the room and began a discussion about the new (utterly fabulous) They’re Real Push-Up Liner which has been five years in the making and officially launches next month. What amazes me, and this can apply to pretty much anything these days, is how much technology hugely influences and dictates modern development and the gel liner is no different. Some would think it strange that technology applies to the beauty industry but it does, the clever AccuFlex tip which hugs the lash line while pushing the lashes out of the way as it glides across the eye lid effortlessly making the process of applying eyeliner a dream is no stab in the dark, its calculated intelligence and a result of months, years of painstaking research! But you know all this…

But what you don’t know and what we Elle Insiders didn’t know but were then stunned to learn was that our reviews in all their varying forms and mix of opinions and praising, had been presented at the Benefit global brand event in San Francisco! What a feeling that must have been to those behind the creation of the liner to see everyday young women absolutely loving the product and receiving it so well! As much as we were flattered we did kinda’ shit ourselves at the thought of our reviews being aired in that way!

After the talk, our attention was drawn to the fact that there was in fact a resident photo booth, complete with wind machine, in the office which a few of us dashed to as soon as we were freed. Following this, the rest of the evening was spent taking pictures and getting to know each other and the opportunity was there to have the liner professionally applied by Lisa if we wanted to. It really was a fabulous night!

Here are some of the pictures from the event…

Excited Elle Insiders with their goody bags!

We all left that night with a shiny goody bag containing They’re Real Mascara, They’re Real Push-up Liner and the specially formulated They’re Real Remover, which if you remember from my review and I know it was mentioned in others, the liner can be a bit of a nightmare to remove. If you wear it all day, it generally comes off fine but if you put it on for only a couple of hours it does take some scrubbing! So it was as much interesting as it was exciting to learn a remover had been made to address this!  Upon departure we couldn’t thank Elle enough for inviting us to meet them all and venture into the magical world of the Elle Fashion Cupboard, it was an amazing opportunity and one we’ll be keen to replicate again!

Elle Insider: Luxury Mystery Eyeliner Review

Hey Sweeties,

Today is a bit of a first and quite the unique opportunity… I am reviewing a totally new, totally not available to buy beauty product which for this beauty newbie, is quite exciting!

As you know, I am no expert in the beauty department but I know what I like and what I don’t and my journey for me right now is about gaining more of an education about products and refining my own collection of make-up and improving my daily application. I have been a subscriber to Elle Magazine since I think about 2007 and as part of being a subscriber I get access to various discounts, competitions and opportunities like the one today where a selection of us get to exclusively try something no one else has!

2014-04-23 18.09.09

So, what’s the mystery totally new product I have been trying? Well Sweeties, it quite literally is a mystery as part of the appeal is that the brand has yet to be revealed! The focus isn’t for us (Elle subscribers) to guess but more so to determine the quality, durability and ease of application. If we knew the brand it would affect how we received the product, probably quite significantly. What I can tell you is that it’s eyeliner… a luxury new eyeliner.

“This is no regular eyeliner. It’s been in development for over five years, and it’s the first ever lash hugging gel liner pen with a patented AccuFlex tip, specifically designed to make applying gel liner easier”.

2014-04-23 18.09.51

To access the liner, you twist off the cap (or Tournez Le Bouchon –is that a clue perhaps, could the brand be French?) to reveal the special tip, and then you twist the end a couple of clicks to reveal the gel.

2014-04-23 17.55.41

My initial reaction is positive, I like the feel of the pen in the hand and the brainbox behind the AccuFlex tip clearly understands the demand on applying a smooth, clean line. As you can see from my hand, the gel is a thick black; exactly what I like and just running the pen across my skin left a good finish. On my eye lid, I achieved the same –starting in the middle, I comfortably and confidently drew a clean line above my lashes and ending in a flick (or wing) before I went back over and into the corners. It is so refreshing to finally find an eyeliner that applies easily, swiftly and effectively. Regular readers will know that within my beauty favourites I use two eyeliners –Maybelline Eyeliner Matic and Collection Fast Stroke eyeliner. Recently I have opted for a fresher look in my daily make-up so I have almost completely abandoned my staple eyeliner- matic which I would use on my lower water line on a religious basis. However, I have wanted eyeliner on my top lid and to be honest, I just find liquid liner so frustrating and time consuming, applying without it colouring my crease with black dots and lines is a nightmare. So this new mystery eyeliner really has got me excited!

As I mentioned earlier, I am no beauty expert so to even stand a chance of accurately identifying the brand is slim however from the packaging (although I assume this will change once released into stores) and feel of the product, I will take a punt that it might be Bourjois, Benefit or, considering the word ‘luxury’ and the notion of it possibly being French, maybe YSL is worth a gander? The product is definitely of good quality but I desperately hope it’s affordable. To get so many Elle subscribers dizzy in delight at this new product, for it to then be really high end would not only be quite mean, it would actually be quite pointless. Surely the objective of getting us to try the eyeliner out is to captivate us into spreading the word upon release and queuing out the door to purchase it?

Some lasting notes… A small concern of mine is that there is no way of identifying when you’re going to run out of gel, eventually you are going to click the end and nothing will come out and no woman likes to be caught out. It is also a bitch to get off! The eyeliner has fantastic durability and lasts all day but it’s a struggle to remove, even getting it off the back of my hand took scrubbing! But on the whole and in the context of the rest of the review, are they deal breakers? Of course not! As soon as this product is revealed to us all and available to buy… providing it is affordable, I am first in the queue!

Until next time x
