A Worrying Disney Princess Obsession

Disney princesses

Hey Sweeties,

A few thoughts for you today on my feelings about how I am slightly weary of Disney Princesses and how they seem to be inflicting a certain kind of ideology…

1. Brides wanting to be Princesses on their big day

On a Bride’s big day, she should absolutely feel like a princess and treated like a queen. The part that gets me though is when Bride’s-to-be on some well-known wedding shows (Don’t Tell the Bride, I’ve Found the Gown, and Say Yes to the Dress), make me feel ill when they say how they’ve dreamt of their wedding since they were little. Call me a minority but although I grew up understanding the value of marriage and that it was one day destined, I never for one moment ever thought about my wedding. Brides who have genuinely bought into the wedding idea early on I can’t help but feel were too submerged into the Disney princess fantasy and the whole meeting Prince Charming kinda’ thing. While we’re on the topic, without wishing to offend anyone, Disney themed weddings, what is that all about?! Five-year-old’s party, yes. Grown-up wedding, no.

2. Misstasia

This was the four-part girl group on the most recent series of Britain’s Got Talent. Don’t get me wrong, despite being a little bit cringey, they were different and did to be fair, sound as if Ariel, Snow White, Belle and Aurora did actually get together and form a girl group. Cute but a bit worrying why teenagers are choosing to sing like Disney princesses and not like say, Little Mix? Just a thought.

3. Little girls walking around dressed in their Disney Princess outfits

I didn’t actually witness this fully until I went to Disney on Ice at Christmas (here) and the amount of little Elsa’s complete with clip-in braid walking around The O2 was quite alarming. When I was younger, despite loving the films, I never thought about the princesses outside of them and I think little girls today are the same, except they become obsessed because they are fed all the merchandise by family and friends and the land of make-believe takes on a new level. Frozen (that in my opinion isn’t actually that good despite the hype), has a lot to answer for!

Now, although the above points sound like I am Disney (princess) bashing, it’s been fairly well documented on here that I love a good Disney film as much as the next person. I still find a great comfort in curling up on the sofa on a Sunday afternoon and losing myself in some Disney when I get the chance. Ian –despite slightly mocking my Disney love- likes that I can still do this, and (excuse the term) “thinks it’s cute”. I also don’t think that at 27 nearly 28 years old, this is totally unacceptable (take a look at my previous post, Too Old for Disney? here). But in regards to this post, I do think people need to take a step back and look at how much the Disney princess obsession is taking over. Real-life princess reality is that mere hours after giving birth, you have to get made up and present yourself and your newborn baby to the media. I love the Cambridge’s (here) but jeez, man!

What do we think, guys? Am I reading too much into this or do you agree that this princess obsession is going a little far?

Until next time x

I’ve never been a Disney fan, not even as a kid, but I love My Little Pony – and I’m over 30! 🙂
